What the Premier League are really saying about replaying Tottenham vs Liverpool now

The Premier League will not give Liverpool the chance to replay their controversial loss against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The Reds were on the wrong end of a number of high-profile decisions, the worst being the incorrect decision to disallow Luis Diaz’s perfectly good opener for offside.

But as Liverpool await the audio recordings between the VAR and on-pitch officials, The Times have ruled out any possibility of a rematch.

They claim that the Premier League would ‘not even consider’ the game being redone, as many clubs have seen poor refereeing decisions go against them in the past. The inference is that these teams would then push to have games replayed in light of further bad calls in the future.

Whatever the outcome is from a Liverpool point of view, it’s time to wave any chance of the points goodbye.

No rematch for Liverpool

There will have been very few – if any – of a Liverpool persuasion expecting anything different than this.

Although it’s true that this is a very unique incident in terms of VAR, a replay was simply never going to happen.

Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean that Liverpool can’t keep pushing the officials for answers and, more importantly, for change.

They can’t get the goal and potentially the points that were stolen from them on Saturday back, but they can prevent more damage being done in the future.

What seems to have been lost amongst the fall-out of all of this, is that this will benefit not just Liverpool, but every team in the Premier League.

The Reds have been questioned for exactly what they want to get out of hammering the officials. But it’s pretty obvious, really. This has happened once and could have massive ramifications for Liverpool. Why wouldn’t they try and stop the same thing happening for a second, third and fourth time?

There are some who – in our opinion – justifiably will think that nothing PGMOL do or say will be enough. The game is done and we’ll never know who’d have taken the points if things had played out as they should have. But Liverpool must at least push it until they’re satisfied with the ending.
