Joe Gomez looks set to earn a first England call-up in four years having starred for Liverpool this season.
And the 26-year-old could have Reds boss Jurgen Klopp to thank with Gareth Southgate poised to select him for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.
According to Sky Sports, Gomez is primed to be named in Southgate’s squad, which will be released on Thursday ahead of next week’s international break.
The former Charlton man hasn’t added to his 11 Three Lions caps since 2020, but he looks set to be rewarded as a result of his fine form.
Gomez has been deployed in four positions by Klopp this term, where he has impressed at centre-back, right-back, left-back and in defensive midfield.
Following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Premier League title rivals Manchester City last Sunday, Klopp called out Southgate over his reluctance to play Gomez.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he simply stated: “Joe Gomez. Gareth, honestly?”
And last week, the ex-Borussia Dortmund managed pleaded for the inclusion of Gomez in Southgate’s next squad.
Klopp said: “I am not standing here telling Gareth who he should pick but you can get one player and have four positions covered. Wonderful.
“If you play football at this level, there is (big) difference between centre-half, full-back, right, left, to the No 6 – and he is capable of that transition in his mind.
“He is one of those stories. What a wonderful player he is and I am so happy he can show that again.
“In midfield, the game is coming from all angles. Everything changes and he has dealt with it so well, it’s crazy. Really good and super-important.”
It’s not just Gomez that looks set to return to England after a number of years.
Sky have also alleged that Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland will be recalled having impressed in Scotland following his Crystal Palace exit.
The last of the 31-year-old’s nine England appearances came in 2018.
