‘I think so’: Danny Murphy says one Liverpool player is ‘not up to the level’ needed under Arne Slot

Liverpool are leaving it late in the summer transfer window do improve their squad ahead of the new season.

FSG have limited transfer options, with the Liverpool owners believing they already have a very high quality squad.

But Arne Slot is seemingly keen on landing a new midfielder, with Liverpool wanting to sign Martin Zubimendi.

The Real Sociedad ace just helped Spain win Euro 2024, and would be a welcome addition to Slot’s Liverpool side.

Midfield is an area that has undergone major transformation in recent times, with the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataro Endo and Ryan Gravenberch having all joined last summer.

Danny Murphy makes Wataru Endo claim at Liverpool

They have enjoyed different levels of success so far, with former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believing one hasn’t quite hit the heights required at Anfield.

Asked on talkSPORT if signing a new number six is now the priority, Murphy replied: “I think so. You always want good players everywhere, but yeah, I think that makes sense.

“Endo’s done well, but he’s not up to the level of [Declan] Rice and Rodri, when you think of the two dominant teams last year. That position is key.

“They had different players playing, Mac Allister dropped in and played it more as a technical ball player in there, but that powerhouse in the holding midfield role, the athleticism, the physicality, the ability to get about like Rice and Rodri do, yeah, I think that makes sense.”

What will Arne Slot do with Wataru Endo?

Jurgen Klopp desperately needed to sign new midfielders last summer, having lost the likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner and Naby Keita.

Fortunately, he hasn’t left his successor in such a hole, but Slot would be foolish not to bring in at least one top holding midfielder.

The position has been troublesome for Liverpool since the departure of Fabinho, whose no-nonsense approach was hugely appreciated at Anfield.

And as Murphy noted, Endo has filled the gap well, but perhaps many fans want a more talented and energetic figure in that position.

Endo’s spell on Merseyside is potentially in danger of already ending, but Slot could do a lot worse than having the Japanese international as a reserve number six.
