‘I knew…’ Mikel Arteta isn’t surprised ‘top coach’ won’t be next Liverpool manager

Several weeks remain before the season is over and Liverpool fans will say their goodbyes to Jurgen Klopp.

Whether it’s the final Premier League game of the season against Wolves or the Europa League final, it will prove to be the German’s last.

A team like Arsenal, who dented their Premier League title hopes by losing to Aston Villa on Sunday, could have a huge say on how life ends for Klopp at Anfield.

If Mikel Arteta’s side continues to slip up, along with new leaders Manchester City, then it’s Liverpool who will be champions.

But the team themselves aren’t helping matters after the 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, so they need to get their own job done.

And whoever the next manager is, whether it’s Sporting Lisbon’s thriving coach Ruben Amorim or Brighton’s no-nonsense coach, Roberto De Zerbi.

One thing is for sure, everyone now knows that it won’t be Bayer Leverkusen’s title-winning manager, Xabi Alonso.

Before his team could secure the title on Sunday, the legendary midfielder was labelled a ‘top coach’ by his fellow countryman, Mikel Arteta, as he told Sky Sports.

There was a lot of noise about Alonso, not just possibly replacing Klopp, but probably becoming Bayern Munich’s next coach or even Real Madrid’s.

But the Leverkusen man put all of that to bed by sharing in his press conference during the international break that he will stay.

For some, including those at Liverpool, it was a surprise, but not for Arteta because he stated that he knew it was going to happen.

Xabi Alonso wins the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen

“I did, to be fair,” said Arteta on whether he expected Alonso to stay. “Knowing him, I did.

“So impressive, not only what he is doing as a manager, but what he did as a player as well and representing the Basque country in the way that he did when he played for Madrid and Liverpool. Unbelievable career.

“And I knew. I knew he was going to be a coach. I knew he was going to be a top coach. I am really happy for him.”

Who will be Liverpool’s next manager?

The favourite now seems to be Amorim, who is pushing to win the title in Portugal himself.

You would imagine that before Klopp is out of the door, the club would want to name their next manager because they can’t allow to run this beyond the summer.

Plus, the new face through the door has to reshape the squad and deal with transfer matters.

But you have to say, whoever it will be, you do feel sorry for them because, not only will they have to replace Klopp, but they might also have to do without Mohamed Salah.

If he ends up in Saudi Arabia, then that’s a big hole in Liverpool’s starting XI, as well as on the touchline.
