Jordan Henderson looked stunned after he was criticised for his ‘worst performance’ since joining Ajax in January.
The 33-year-old was unable to inspire the Dutch giants to victory over Fortuna Sittard last Sunday, as they snatched a point in a 2-2 draw in dramatic fashion.
Another underwhelming Ajax display leaves them fifth in the Eredivisie table – 29 points behind leaders PSV.
And one reporter pulled up Henderson’s lacklustre showing in an interview that has went viral ahead of his return to England in Thursday’s Europa Conference League clash at Aston Vila.
Henderson didn’t take kindly to the suggestion that it was his and the club’s ‘worst performance’ this season.
Giving a wry smile in disbelief as to what he heard, the ex-Liverpool skipper said: “No, because we didn’t lose. It’s always worse when you lose a game.”
Again pressed on the ‘poor’ display, Henderson remarked: “It wasn’t our best performance, but we knew it was going to be a tough game.”
The reporter then challenged Henderson on his use of ‘too many square balls,’ and why he didn’t pass forward more.
To which the 81-cap Three Lions international agreed that he and his teammates should have created more.
He then insisted: “When you don’t perform well, you keep going right until the end and we didn’t lose the game.”
Refusing to back down on his critique of Ajax, the reporter then asked Henderson whether he can call it a ‘poor performance’.
His question left Henderson to simply state: “You can call it what you want.”
Fans were loving the tense interview, as one social media user posted: “The Dutch are so direct, no sugarcoating!! Love them.”
Another commented: “He had to pause and laugh when the journo called him s****.”
A third added: “He’s rattled here haha. Don’t get questions like this in England.”
And this supporter messaged: “Lmao Dutch journalists are wild.”
