Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has come to the defense of his former club, insisting that they should not be underestimated in the Premier League title race.
Despite dropping two points in a draw against Brighton, Murphy believes that Liverpool still has what it takes to challenge the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur for the top spot. Currently three points behind Spurs, Liverpool aims to keep up with its rivals throughout the season.
While pundits like Gary Neville and Alan Shearer have expressed doubts about Liverpool’s ability to mount a serious title challenge, Murphy remains optimistic. He points out that despite the disappointing result against Brighton, there were many positives to take from the game.
“For those of you who doubted Jürgen Klopp and this Liverpool team, although they drew, they are in this title race,” the former Reds midfielder told the BBC’s Match of the Day.

“Second-half, they should have had the game won. Lots of positives; midfielders coming in and hitting the ground running, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai. The forward players are nice and competitive at the top of the pitch, everyone is trying to keep each other out of the team.
“It’s great to see Manchester City are human, they can lose games, they can play badly. I still think they’re going to be the team to beat. Arsenal did well in a scrappy game, got the job done, and of course we’ve got to keep an eye out for Tottenham. Everybody is playing well at Tottenham [but I’m] not sure they’ve got the strength in depth to stick with the big boys. We’ll have to wait and see.”
While Liverpool faces skepticism from some quarters, Murphy’s message serves as a reminder that it should not be written off in the title race. With a strong squad and the unpredictability of the Premier League, anything can happen as the season progresses. Liverpool fans will be hoping that their team can prove the doubters wrong and challenge for the top honors once again.
