Scott McTominay has shed light on what Erik ten Hag told him before coming on to rescue Manchester United against Brentford. The midfielder bagged two goals in injury time to seal a 2-1 comeback win and send the Red Devils into the international break on a high.
Brought on from the bench in the 87th minute, McTominay single-handedly turned the Red Devils’ fortunes around with a quickfire double that eased the pressure on Ten Hag.
When asked what the manager had told him before being thrown into the lions’ den, McTominay said: “It was very loud, the fans were roaring us on so I couldn’t hear fully.
“[Ten Hag] probably said something like: ‘Go on and score,’ which is what I did. When the ball dropped to me [for the first goal] it was at an awwkard height and I didn’t think I could get my leg there, control it and score.
With more fixtures to play this weekend, the victory catapults United into the top-half of the Premier League table. Ten Hag’s side now have a two-week break from domestic action before a trip to face Sheffield United on October 21.
“Everyone knows we are in a difficult period at the minute, but we have fighters in the group that want to keep going right until the end,” McTominay continued. “It could have been anyone on that pitch scoring the two goals. Really pleased and hopefully we can build on that from here.
“Sometimes we feel like we are in our own bubble with people outside only saying negative things, but we just have to block that out and be better after the international break.”
