If Manchester United keeps their faith and trust, according to Luke Shaw, they can fight for the Premier League title.
This season, United has improved under Erik ten Hag’s leadership. On Saturday, goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford helped the Reds defeat Manchester City in the Manchester derby for the first time since March 2020.
In that game at Old Trafford, Jack Grealish’s goal did break the tie, but United came back with an incredible comeback.
With the 2-1 victory, United is currently only one point behind City in third place in the Premier League rankings.
This weekend, Arsenal has the chance to extend their lead to eight points, but Shaw, who has recently excelled in central defense, has refused to put a damper on thoughts of a potential title challenge.
“It’s incredible [atmosphere], I’ve been here a long time, I think eight years, and today the atmosphere was the best I’ve been involved in,” Shaw told MUTV. “It shows the fans are with us, they’re pushing us in the right direction and I hope they really enjoyed it.
“We’re pleased to have restored their happiness. It’s still early, yes, but we have four competitions left, so we need to strive as high as we can. Given that this is Manchester United, we must strive to prevail in every game.
“Why not believe we can do it if we have that confidence and belief? Even if it’s early, we must keep moving forward, take the proper actions, and monitor our progress.
When Shaw was questioned about Rashford’s performance, he praised the forward and called him a “essential component” of the team’s victory.
Rashford is an outstanding football player, and that much is clear, he continued. “You can see it, and I think the greatest thing for him was to start scoring more goals and getting into the correct situations — I think he’s doing that now.
He needs to continue working hard, as I always say. He is essential to getting us where we want to go.
