Darwin Nunez sarcastically asserted that Mohamed Salah, a teammate at Liverpool, is superior than both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Uruguayan, who moved to Anfield for an initial £64 million during the summer, made his way back to Merseyside earlier this month after a trying World Cup debut for his country.
The 23-year-old has been a threat for opposing defenders in Jurgen Klopp’s team’s two games back in action, despite the fact that he hasn’t been able to add to his nine goals this season total.
But prior to Liverpool’s clash with Aston Villa on Boxing Day, one supporter, who appeared to be waiting outside the Reds’ Midlands-based hotel, asked Nunez his opinion on who he thought was the best footballer in the world at the moment.
In the long-running argument between Messi and Ronaldo, a recent social media craze has seen individuals ask sportsmen who they think is the superior of the two generational players. Nunez’s response, despite seeming lighthearted, was not what was anticipated.
Making his way out of the hotel to sign autographs, the supporter asked the Uruguayan “Messi or Ronaldo?” to which the Liverpool striker paused briefly before responding with “Salah, Salah” and a broad smile.
Nunez and Salah will be expected to start Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Leicester City at Anfield on Friday evening.
