Rio Ferdinand has labelled Mohamed Salah’s goalscoring exploits at Liverpool as being ‘crazy.’
Salah has been the Reds’ top scorer in each of his six seasons at the club so far. As he closes in on 200 Liverpool goals, there’s no doubt that he’s one of the Reds greatest ever players.
Being a Manchester United legend, Ferdinand isn’t someone you’d think would put much stock into that. However, while speaking about Marcus Rashford on YouTube channel SDS this week, the former defender admitted that Mo is at an ‘elite level.’
“They are similar positions [Rashford and Salah] and the output that Salah has been putting out for all these years has been crazy,” said the 44-year-old.
“If we’re talking about being elite level, Rashford has got to get to those type of numbers and being able to take a game away from a team with big moments.”
Salah earns Ferdinand respect
Since his £34m arrival from Roma in 2017, Salah has been transformed into one of football’s most recognisable faces.
In all likelihood, you could show his picture to non-football fans and they’d know who he is. His influence on and off the pitch has led to Mo becoming one of the game’s global icons.
One of those doesn’t happen without the other, though. The football always has to come first. And Salah is a sublime footballer, a supreme goal scorer.
Some looking at the score sheets from pre-season may be beginning to doubt that. The Egyptian has actually scored just once during the summer matches. Each of his four senior attacking colleagues at Liverpool have scored more.
Even young Ben Doak has the same amount as him, as does 18-year-old Bobby Clark.
But that doesn’t tell the whole story. Because although Salah is exceptional at putting the ball in the net, he’s also brilliant at helping others to do the same. As well as his one goal, the 31-year-old has six assists in four pre-seasons games. Six.
This has always been an underrated part of Salah’s game. He won the Premier League Playmaker Award as well as the Golden Boot in 2022. But it’ll be the goals that he’s remembered for, the crazy, crazy goals.
