Liverpool dropped points in Wednesday’s Premier League encounter with Newcastle United as they played out a dramatic 3-3 draw at St James’ Park.
Arne Slot’s Reds twice came from behind before taking the lead late on, only for a late Fabian Schar strike to break the travelling supporters’ hearts.
Liverpool trailed to Alexander Isak’s 35th-minute strike as the Swede got half a yard on Virgil van Dijk and fired home.
However, the Reds equalised in the 51st minute as Mohamed Salah got the first of his goal contributions, setting up Curtis Jones to fire into the roof of the Magpies net.
Newcastle retook the lead on 63 minutes, with the impressive Isak setting up Anthony Gordon to poke a low finish past Caoimhin Kelleher.
Liverpool drew level once again in the 68th minute as substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold’s superb delivery found Salah for an eight-yard finish.
It looked as though the Egypt international had salvaged a win for Liverpool on 83 minutes with a fierce strike into the far corner of Newcastle’s net.
However, Kelleher’s late decision to leave a ball to trickle out for a goal kick came back to haunt him as Fabian Schar struck from an incredibly tight angle.
During the game, BBC Sport pundit Pan Nevin questioned a decision made by Slot in the game.
Pat Nevin questions why Trent Alexander-Arnold did not start for Liverpool
Nevin, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, believed that Alexander-Arnold should not have started the game on the substitutes’ bench.
“It didn’t take them much time to click into gear on that right-hand side after making those changes,” he said after Salah’s equaliser.
“You just wonder why Trent Alexander-Arnold did not start the game. He’s got a great understanding with Mohamed Salah. That is extraordinary.”
How the media rated Trent Alexander-Arnold
Liverpool.com gave Alexander-Arnold a 7 out of 10 and wrote: “Came on and immediately assisted a goal.
“Booked for a foul on Gordon. Showed intensity and quality and helped make the difference in the final third.”
Meanwhile, the Liverpool Echo gave him an 8 out of 10 and wrote: “Made huge difference to Liverpool’s attacking efforts down right flank and claimed two assists.”
